Charles Maitland

I came across this war grave in Girvan Old Churchyard and it looked a good candidate for some further research.
Charles Maitland was born in Patrick on Christmas Day 1893 and at the time of his death was the 4th engineer on the SS Clan Cumming

He was killed by an explosion caused by a torpedo attack by UB-55 off Falmouth on 5/12/1917. UB-55 was subsequently sunk on 22/4/1918 after striking a mine.
Maitland also served in the Balkan campaign with the RASC and was awarded The Mercantile Marine Medal and the British Medal for his war service.
